Service Description

Your Lecturer: Dr. Mitzi Scotten Course Objectives: Differentiate between effective healthcare teams and working groups, and describe the impact of teamwork and communication on patient safety and clinical outcomes. Identify common causes of communication failures, human error, and barriers to effective teamwork in healthcare and first responder environments, including hierarchical structures, incomplete handoffs, and poor psychological safety. Explain how principles of Crew Resource Management (CRM), the To Err Is Human report, and TeamSTEPPS have influenced modern patient safety initiatives and team-based communication strategies. Apply evidence-based communication tools, including ISBAR, closed-loop communication, briefs, huddles, debriefs, and speaking-up strategies, to improve patient handoffs, teamwork, and clinical decision-making. Evaluate the role of psychological safety in fostering a culture of safety, encouraging effective communication across disciplines, reducing preventable medical errors, and improving patient outcomes.
